Treatment of tooth root canals with microscope

Nowadays the microscope is used in all areas of dentistry – from the installation of dental fillings till any complex surgical intervention. Nevertheless, most often usage of microscope, is during the need of retreatment for tooth root canals. The microscope allows you to find additional channels, which, if left untreated, causes inflammation. Dental treatment with the microscope allows the usage of a drill with minimal removal of tooth structure. Practice shows that the cavities for filling are 3-5 times smaller by volume in comparison to the drill without usage of microscope. Dental microscope has become indispensable for carrying out a high-quality dental treatment and provides most precise diagnosis.

Description

Why do we recommend root canal treatment under a microscope?

What the doctor cannot see remains untreated.
A microscope makes root canal treatment more precise, predictable and effective.

Incredible precision (up to 25x magnification)

The microscope magnifies and illuminates the working area, allowing precise identification of: micro-cracks, additional canals, sites of inflammation

High success rate (>90%)

Thanks to high precision, all canals can be detected and treated, reducing the risk of recurring inflammation and ensuring a long-term result.

Saving “complex” teeth

Allows retreatment and preservation of teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. This is always more practical and simpler than implantation.

Comfort and pain-free treatment

The procedure is performed under effective anaesthesia. Thanks to the ergonomic design of the microscope, the patient remains comfortable throughout the entire treatment.

Endodontic services under a microscope

The high magnification of the microscope allows us to perform ultra-precise and complex procedures:

Primary root canal treatment

We locate and clean all root canals, including small and hidden ones. This reduces the risk of recurring inflammation.

Root canal retreatment (Re-treatment)

We correct previously poor-quality treatment: remove old materials and infection, and perform the treatment again — correctly and precisely.

Removal of broken instruments

We remove instruments stuck in the canal — a procedure that is virtually impossible without a microscope.

Perforation repair

We restore damage to the root wall, preserving the tooth and preventing extraction.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is root canal treatment painful?
No. Modern anaesthesia ensures that the procedure is completely painless. After the anaesthesia wears off, the tooth may be sensitive when biting for a few days, but this is a normal part of the healing process.
Why is a microscope needed if another dentist treated without one?
It is impossible to see the openings of small canals or cracks with the naked eye. The success rate of treatment without a microscope is significantly lower, and many such teeth later require retreatment or extraction.
How many visits does root canal treatment require?
Depending on the condition of the tooth and the degree of inflammation, treatment is completed in 1–2 visits. Retreatment under a microscope may be more labour-intensive.
What is root canal retreatment?
It is the repeated treatment of a tooth that was previously treated unsuccessfully. This is a complex procedure performed by an endodontist (specialist) and almost always requires a microscope.

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is a dental procedure designed to save your natural tooth whose nerve has been irreversibly damaged. At the Mikroravi clinic in Tallinn, we use a ZEISS surgical microscope, which is the gold standard in endodontics. This ensures maximum precision and allows us to successfully treat even those teeth considered “hopeless”.
