How to prepare a child for their first visit to the dentist?

To start with, try to choose one doctor for your child to minimise the stress of constantly finding themselves in a new situation.
A dentist is like a family doctor who knows you well and takes care of your health over many years. After all, you don’t visit a new family doctor every time.
When booking an appointment, ask whether the doctor specialises in children. Try to take your child to the dentist for the first time when nothing is hurting.
The goal of the first visit is not to place a filling, but to introduce the child to the new environment, the new doctor and their assistants. As a result, the child develops a sense of security and a trusting relationship with the dentist.
Children are very sensitive to the feelings of those close to them. Therefore, if one of the parents has a strong fear of the dentist, it is better for the child to come to the appointment with a family member who does not have this problem. If that is not possible, quietly tell the doctor about it before the visit begins.
Before the visit, you can read your child stories about going to the dentist. For example, “Pirate Peedu and the Spider Dentist” by B. Jugrenson, “Kitten Pooh and the Tooth Fairy” by A. Kupyrina, or “Going to the Dentist” by E. Ulyeva.
It is very important that during the first visit the child is introduced to the instruments, given the chance to hold the saliva ejector, and allowed to press the buttons and pedals. In this way, visiting the doctor is turned through play into a pleasant experience that stays with them for life. Psychologists call this positive imprinting.
