Tooth Treatment
The most classic form of dental treatment — caries treatment — involves removing damaged tooth tissue and filling the defective area with a filling material. There are several types of filling materials, and we can offer various treatment options and methods in different price ranges, depending on the size and location of the defect.
Filling materials used in modern dentistry include:
- glass ionomer cement
- composite material
- gold and porcelain
The first two filling materials can be placed directly during a dental visit, while the third option requires multiple visits, as the filling is manufactured in a dental laboratory.
Dental Treatment — Glass Ionomer
Glass ionomer is a type of dental filling material used primarily for treating baby teeth in children and lesions near the gum line in adults. This filling is biologically tooth-friendly, but it is brittle and wears quickly, making it unsuitable for large fillings on the chewing surface due to insufficient durability.
Dental Treatment — Composite Fillings
Composite is a type of dental filling material used primarily for treating visible teeth, i.e. front teeth, but increasingly also for back teeth nowadays.
Composite is cured on the tooth using ultraviolet light, and the filling is polymerised in small portions to prevent shrinkage on the tooth. Composite bonds to the tooth using a special bonding agent and, if desired, allows the shape and colour of the tooth to be changed.
Dental Treatment — Gold, Composite and Porcelain Inlays
To create gold, composite or porcelain inlays, the old filling and caries-damaged softened tooth tissue are drilled out. The resulting cavity is prepared into the correct shape, after which an impression is taken. Based on this impression, a dental technician manufactures an inlay in the laboratory that fits the tooth cavity precisely, which the dentist then bonds into the tooth. A ceramic inlay is made to match the exact colour of the tooth and is therefore suitable for visible areas.
Laboratory-manufactured inlays are considerably more expensive than regular fillings placed during a dental visit, but they offer superior durability and appearance compared to those mentioned above. An inlay can also be used to correct an unsightly colour or shape of a front tooth — for this purpose, laminates (veneers) are typically used.
